Stephen Perkins

|
On
Saturday, November 13, drummer Stephen Perkins conducted a most
unusual clinic. Stephen performed in a drum circle. Everyone who
attended the clinic either brought their own percussion instruments
or were given a percussion instrument to participate in the clinic.
He dazzled the audience starting with his splash cymbal solo using
his hands, timpani solo using an inverted china cymbal placed on
the top of the timpani head, which created an unusual and unforgettable
sound. Stephen performed with taped music featuring his new solo
project, Banyan. He finished the clinic with a 45-minute drum solo.
Stephen definitely had the chops. Drum Workshop, Zildjian, Latin
Percussion and Pro Mark hosted this clinic.

Dave Weckl

On Saturday, December 11, drummer Dave Weckl conducted
a Master Class in a very intimate setting. Over 75 students attended
this most spectacular event. As always, Dave captured everyone’s
attention and had everyone on the edge of his or her seat. He performed
several play along tunes and solos from his new C.D. along with
sequenced music. Gumbi Ortiz, the percussionist for the Al Dimeola
Band, stopped by and played along with Dave. They showed how drums
and percussion work together to create a groove. |
He
also discussed hand and foot techniques, practice routines, microphone
techniques, and drum set-ups. In his discussions, he emphasized
the importance of having a local pro drum shop and “hats off”
to A.J. for keeping the drum shops alive. He also commented on when
he was growing up how fortunate he was to have a pro drum shop in
his hometown. Yamaha sponsored this Master Class.

On
Wednesday, December 15, Dennis Chambers, one of the great drummers
of this century, conduced a 2-hour Master Class. Dennis started the
class with his legendary one-hour drum solo. He dazzled the audience

on the cymbals, ostinato patterns with his feet, and several hand
and foot combinations. After his opening solo, he performed his funk-meets-jazz
style drive accompanied with sequence music. He also talked about
his wild days with George Clinton and Parliament Funk. At the end,
Dennis performed another ripping and unbelievable solo that definitely
left the audience speechless. This was followed by Dennis’ famous
last words …. “Are there are any questions?”
